2011 Recipient: Paige McConnaughy
Named for the president of the first Soroptimist club, The Soroptimist Violet Richardson Award program honors young women ages 14 to 17, who make the community and world a better place through volunteering. Volunteer programs can include, but are not limited to, projects that address social problems such as homelessness, violence, drug abuse, unemployment, illiteracy, discrimination, AIDS, poverty and pollution. Projects may assist any group including the elderly, the disabled, and mentally or emotionally challenged groups.
Soroptimist clubs implement the program at the local level, where awards vary. Club-level recipients than become eligible for a $1000 cash award, with a matching $1000 cash award for the charitable organization of the recipient's choosing. The Soroptimist organization grants one finalist $500 award to the recipient's volunteer organization.
