On Saturday, July 31, 2010, the community came together to make it possible for 224 disadvantaged children from Kings County to shop for back-to-school clothing. Thanks to Kings County Human Services Agency and other businesses, organizations and individuals, 224 kids were given a $100 gift card to spend at JCPenney at Hanford Mall. Each child was escorted by a non-related adult. In addition, each child received a backpack filled with school supplies courtesy of Kings County Office of Education, KDUVfm and Sonic. Both the kids and chaperones were treated to breakfast courtesy of Knights of Columbus.
For many years, Soroptimist had participated in a smaller, similar event that was hosted by Mervyn's. When Mervyn's closed in 2008, Soroptimist decided that the event was too important to stop so they began managing the event themselves. This year’s event was the 2nd Annual Soroptimist Back-to-School Childspree.
