Hanford Soroptimists support the international organization by sending yearly funds to the Disaster Recovery Fund. While 99.9% of the money we raise through our annual fundraiser, Festival of Trees, stays in Kings County this donation is part of our international goodwill mission.
The Soroptimist Disaster Recovery Fund provides grants to clubs and regions for relief work that benefits women and girls in areas affected by a natural disaster or acts of war. In 2008-2009, SIA distributed $70,000 in disaster recovery funds to one region and three clubs: $20,000 each to the Philippines Region and SI Kalibo following a typhoon; $20,000 to SI Cedar Rapids and $10,000 to SI Blumenau Leste following severe flooding. In addition, SIA sent $52,000 in disaster recovery funds to SIE for distribution to clubs in Kenya following the political violence that erupted throughout the country after disputed general elections. Seven clubs in Kenya received funding ranging from $2,700 to $11,800.
